3 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Old Wood Windows

Last updated 5 years ago

Wood windows are common in both older and newer homes, but all wood eventually deteriorates over time through exposure to weather, insects, and normal wear and tear.  Schedule a free in-home consultation with one of our licensed window contractors here at Progressive Insulation & Windows of Southern California if your wood windows exhibit any of these signs below:

Interior Condensation

Condensation occurs when moist air meets a cooler surface.  While it isn’t uncommon for condensation to form on the outside of your windows in humid weather, interior window condensation around the bottom edge of the glass indicates that your windows aren’t effectively insulating your home and preventing water damage.  Condensation is common in older single-pane windows, though a damaged double-paned window can also allow moisture in between the glass panes.

Weather Damage

Although wood windows can last for many years with proper installation and care, they are still especially prone to rot.  Loose seals and degraded weather stripping can cause air leakage and trap excess moisture within the frame, facilitating mold growth.  Remember that wood tends to rot from the inside out, and that even minor signs of water damage could quickly lead to expensive home repairs.

Difficulty Opening and Closing

Over time, the shape of a window opening can change as a home settles, especially with the occasional California earthquake.  This can compress the window frame, resulting in a “sticky” window, and may even form cracks in the frame or walls.  If this is the case, it is especially important to seek out the services of a specialized window contractor to examine the problem, as your new replacement windows will likely require custom dimensions.

Replacing your windows is only cost-effective when you address the root causes of the damage.  We at Progressive Insulation & Windows suggest having one of our trained specialists inspect your home to give you an accurate assessment on your home windows.  As a specialty contractor, we have over 30 years of experience in home insulation and window replacement services in Woodland Hills and the surrounding areas.  Call (818) 709-0988 or visit us online to learn more about our services.
